USA: New York Department of Labour comments on deductions for amounts owed Print E-mail
The New York State Department of Labour has confirmed its position that employers cannot deduct from an employee's wages amounts owed by the employee to the employer, including for overpayments or repayment of a loan, even with the employee's written authorisation. It stressed that deductions that are paid directly to the employer or its subsidiary "violate the letter of the statute and the policy underlying it".

Belgian case law concerning service inventions is rare, which makes a Ghent Labour Court ruling on the issue particularly noteworthy. The court accepted as a general rule that an employee is not entitled to special remuneration for service inventions.
